Herd - Charlene (Thornton)
aged 85, a devout Christian
woman and loving mother
of Tanya Ross and Shirley
Thomas-Triggs of Kentwood,
MI was welcomed home by
God Sunday, April 11, 2021.
She was the oldest child of
seven children born to the late
Jodie and Odessa May Thorn-
ton.
Charlene Herd was an active
member of Pilgrim Rest Mis-
sionary Baptist Church for 64
years.
Sister Herd enjoyed spending
time with her family and con-
nected with them daily. She
maintained a strong bond and
line of communication with
her children, grandchildren,
siblings, nieces and nephews.
Regardless the distance, she
attended and celebrated fam-
ily reunions, class reunions,
bridal and baby showers,
weddings and graduations
with joy. Her hobbies were
many and her friendships last-
ing.
Charlene was preceded in
death by her parents; loving
husband of 44 years, Jef-
ferson Davis Herd, son, Jef-
ferson Davis Herd, Jr., two
brothers, Hoover Thornton,
Lee Curtis Thornton and sis-
ter, Shirley Sykes.
The treasured memory of our
beloved will be forever cher-
ished by her daughters; Shir-
ley (Tommy) Triggs-Thomas,
Tanya (Kinneth) Ross, five
grandchildren, Donte (Tori)
Triggs, Sonequia Triggs, Eric
(Sarah) Triggs, Tiffany Ross
and Tiera Ross; her sister,
Ideen (John) Spann of Nettle-
ton, MS; her two brothers;
Curtis Lee Thornton of Tu-
pelo, MS and James (Nicki)
Thornton of Detroit, MI; God-
daughter, Sharon Smith;
brother and sisters-in-law,
nieces, nephews, cousins,
extended family and friends.
Service will be held April 17,
2021 at 11:00 a.m. Family will
receive friends one hour prior
to the service at 10:00 a.m.,
Rev. Dr. Timothy Mark Har-
ris, Officiating. Professional
services entrusted to Brown’s
Funeral Home, Ltd, 627 Jef-
ferson Avenue, SE, Grand
Rapids, Michigan. Mama will
be laid to rest at Chapel Hill
Memorial Gardens.
