Obituary of Jannie Mae Flowers

Jannie Mae Flowers was born June 12, 1942, in Webster County, Mississippi, to the late Robert Lee and Minnie Flowers. On June 21, 2026, the Lord called her home.

Jannie received her education through the Webster County School System. Though her formal education ended with high school, she carried throughout life lessons of perseverance, courage, wisdom, and faith. As the youngest of her siblings, she grew up quickly after losing her mother at the age of eight. Alongside her sister Annie, she learned to take on responsibilities once carried by their mother. Through difficult times, the strength, love, poise, and wisdom of her sisters helped shape the woman we came to know and love.

Jannie accepted Christ at an early age. After moving to Grand Rapids, Michigan, she became a member of St. Luke A.M.E. Zion Church under Reverend Hutcherson. Later, she joined Brown Hutcherson Ministries under the leadership of Pastor Nathaniel Moody, where she faithfully served on the Missionary Team and Kitchen Committee. Along with her sisters Annie and Lorethia, she was affectionately known as one of “The Three Musketeers.” Together, they kept the kitchen in order, stomachs full, and God at the center of it all.

At the age of 22, Jannie moved from Grenada, Mississippi, to Chicago, Illinois. While there she welcomed her son, Tony Len, in 1963, and her daughter, Jackie, in 1967. In 1968, she moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where her sisters Annie and Lorethia already lived. She later married Willie McGhee in 1975. Though they separated in 1986, they remained friends until his passing.

Jannie worked at Miller Metals and later at Smith Aerospace Industries, there she met her dear friend, Cecile Brown. The two shared shopping trips, daily conversations, faith, and a lifelong friendship. Jannie loved Sundays, family gatherings, home-cooked
