Katherine Buchanan Obituary

Katherine Buchanan was born on July 25, 1925, in East St. Louis to the late John McSwain and Willie Mae Rencher. She was raised in Chicago, where she attended elementary, middle, and part of her high school education. Her family later relocated to Grand Rapids, where she completed high school and continued her studies at Grand Rapids Junior College.

Katherine was a strong believer who loved God deeply. Her faith was the foundation of her life and the guiding force behind her strength, wisdom, and resilience.

She was well known in her neighborhood for playing her jazz music while tending to her garden. Those melodies, drifting through the yard, became part of the soundtrack of her community. Katherine was stern and direct in her words, but her heart was always genuine. She believed in telling you exactly what you needed to hear — giving you a “good talking to” when necessary — because she

cared deeply. She was serious about education and instilled that same commitment in her children and others around her.

Katherine retired after faithful service with Grand Rapids Public Schools and Blodgett Hospital. Through her work and her personal life, she touched countless lives and left a lasting impact.

She was preceded in death by her father John McSwain; her mother Willie Mae Rencher; her stepfather Bill Rencher; her brothers John McSwain, Bill Rencher Jr., and Leonard Rencher; her sister Yvonne Liggins; her children Patrick Lee, Patricia Lee Thompson, Donald Lee, Mona Rae Lee-Parker, and Yvonne Lee; and her husbands Norman Lee, Alfred Buchanan, and Lloyd Fragale.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving brother Eugene Rencher (Diane Rencher); her children William Lee, Allen Lee (Eunice Lee), Suzane Beards, Steven Buchanan, Kelvin Buchanan (Denise Buchanan), and Ronald Buchanan (Helene Buchanan).

Katherine was blessed with grandchildren: Vernice, Patrick, Veronica, Tyrone, Nikkia, Jack, Javon, Terri, Erica, Topeka, Akhayla, Bernice, Jakke, Andria, Rasheka, Lamont, Terrance, Tonya, Margaret, Omari, Ayana, Amani, Chanale, and Chanson; along with 34 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

She also leaves special friends Vernita Ware and Betty White; former sons-in-law, Pastor Donald Thompson, Gary Parker and daughters-in-law Eunice Lee and Barbara Lee and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

Katherine Buchanan lived a long and impactful life. She loved fiercely, spoke truth boldly, valued education deeply, and praised God faithfully. Her legacy will continue to live on through the many lives she shaped, challenged, and loved in her own unforgettable way.
