Queen Esther (McClain) Scott, was born on December 24, 1928 in Bullock County, Alabama. She was the youngest of 11 children born to Ellis and Eular (Logan) McClain. She moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where she met and married David Scott in 1950 and 12 children were born to that union. She was a devoted wife and mother and dedicated her earlier years taking care of her children. After her husband died at the age of 59 she went to work for Lear Siegler and worked there until her retirement in 1989.
The Queen as she was fondly referred to by her children and grandchildren. She professed a hope in Christ Jesus at an early age and joined the Old Ship AME Zion Church in Bullock County, Ala. After moving to Grand Rapids she joined St. Luke AME Zion Church where she was a faithful member for over 60 years until her death. She was also, a very active member of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society where she was a life member.
The Queen was a well-known and respected member of her community and was always available to assist others in need. She had a special way with young people and they would seek her out for advice. She was admired by many for her gentle quiet spirit and the way she made others feel in her presence. The Queen enjoyed making beautiful quilts for her family, her quilts were a work of ‘art.’ She had a quick wit, never afraid to speak her mind; she meant what she said and said what she meant. The Queen had a way of making those around her feel ‘special’ and acknowledged.
The Queen was preceded in death by her parents, husband David Scott, Sons John Thomas and Tyrone Scott; brothers Ernest Lee, Frank, Thomas, and James Ellis McClain. Sisters, Mattie Henderson, Charlie Lou Harris, Ivean Williams, Carrie Griggs, Eula Mae Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memory one sister Catherine Hough, one brother James (Catherine) McClain, four sons George (Alberta) Coffman, Harvey Jauger Scott (Brooklyn, NY); Maurice Scott and Mark Scott. Six daughter’s Rev. Dr. Beverly Ann (Dr. John) Hair (Beverly Hills, MI), Pearlene Scott, Lynn (Lawrence) Cobbins, Annetta Scott, Vanessa Scott, and Lauri (Herman) Dockery. Thirty-one Grandchildren, 52 Great-Grandchildren, and 7 Great-Great Grandchildren. Plus a host of nephews, nieces, and friends.
