Obituary Thomas Vance Agnew, affectionately known by his friends as "Vance", was born to Murray and Katie Mae Agnew on January 24, 1955. Vance was the youngest of three sons born to that union. He had two older brothers - Bernie and Maurice. As a child, he attended Sigsbee Elementary School, where he met most of his lifelong friends. Vance was always involved in some type of sports activity. He grew strong and a little bigger than most of his friends, but he was not an aggressive one. He had a gentle soul and a sincere disdain for bullies. He would often step in to stop a younger or smaller kid from being bullied by someone who was much larger. He was gifted in several sports, Track, Football, and Basketball. He excelled in all three, but his passion was the game of Basketball. He began playing organized sports in the 6th grade at Sigsbee Elementary, along with his friends Willie Booker, Michael Johnson, Harold Weaver, Pierre Burton, Charles Hudson, and Tino Lampton. This small group of friends would have stayed together throughout junior high school at Harrison Park and later at Ottawa Hills High School. It was at Ottawa Hills that Thomas became the anchor on a Team that would produce several All-City Candidates including himself. He was also a perennial performer in the Gus Macker Tournaments where he took home several prized Championship Trophies. One of the greatest moments of his life was the birth of his daughter, Anika. He often spoke of her as being his most prized achievement. On August 16th at Commonwealth Senior Living, Thomas entered eternal rest after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Murray and Katie Mae Agnew and his brother Maurice Agnew. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Anika, his brother Bernie Agnew, and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. There will be NO "re-past" following the service. Family members, friends, and OHHS Classmates will meet at "Forty Acres Soul Kitchen" from 2-4:00pm, for an "Afterglow" to celebrate and raise a toast to our fallen Classmate, Thomas Vance Agnew. "Forty Acres Soul Kitchen" is located at 1059 Wealthy St SE. Parking is located off Barth St directly across from the establishment.
