Wendell Chivis Obituary

Wendell Albert Chivis affectionately known as “Husband”, “Paycheck”, “Poppa”, “Big Brother”,
“Grandpa” and “Servant”. The title he was most proud of was “Father”. Wendell transitioned to
his Heavenly home at the age of 70, on Wednesday November 30, 2022, surrounded by his
family. Wendell was born on April 6,1952 in Grand Rapids, MI to Eugene Albert and Helen
(Nickerson) Chivis. Wendell was the 3rd child of five children. His parents Eugene Albert Chivis
and Helen Irene Chivis (Nickerson) along with his brother Eugene Craig Chivis preceded him in
death.
Wendell attended Madison Park Elementary school where he was a gifted and talented student
(recommended for double promotion ). He attended South High School and graduated from
Creston High School in 1970. He went on to college where he attended Grand
Valley State University and Grand Rapids Junior College. Wendell’s employment history
included various jobs, his last being a Shipping and Receiving Agent with Grand Rapids
Community College where he retired after 24 years of service.
Wendell was baptized as an infant at St. Philips Episcopal Church where he
was a member. He was active in his faith where he served in two churches. At St. Philips he
was part of the Vestry, a Sexton, Usher and Acolyte. He also served at St. Mark’s Episcopal as
an Assisting Minister, Sexton and Crucifer.
Wendell’s beautiful life will forever be cherished by his beloved wife of 46 years, Bertha R.
Chivis whom he affectionately called “Bert”. He had an open heart and an open door to all those
who needed a place to stay for a while. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching movies, reading,
sports, and watching the History and Discovery Channel. Over the years he acquired an
extensive diverse album and classic comic book collection of different genres. He also shared a
love for cruises, game nights, listening to music, traveling up north to the family cabin and
cooking (best Fried Chicken EVER! and his Spaghetti wasn’t too bad either).
As a husband, Wendell loved being a father to all of his children. He leaves behind to cherish
this legacy, Wife, Mrs. Bertha R. Chivis (Black), his children Lamont (Dionne) Chivis, Theodore
(Jeneen) Castleberry Detroit, MI, Ju’well Castleberry, Mario Getter, Daughter’s Wendelnika
Chivis, Shaykila Sledge (Atlanta, GA).
He also leaves behind his siblings Candace Chivis-Petty of West Bloomfield, MI, Nanci (Leon)
Chivis-Franklin of Overland Park, KS and Monte Chivis. Wendell leaves 19 grandchildren and
12 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Special friends David Lasha and Robert (Doc) Stanciel.
Rest in Heaven Wendell. I wish your time could’ve been extended. You fought a good fight and
finished your race. Henceforth, is stored up a crown of righteousness for you. The Heavenly
Gates are now blessed with a beautiful human being. Rest in peace. You will forever be loved
and missed by your family.
